There are many studies to show that for whatever reason, customers perceive a higher value for gift cards over gift certificates.  It could be because your organization looks more professional if you've gone through the trouble of getting gift cards versus gift certificates, it could be because gift cards are more durable, or it could just be that the marketing out there all has been around gift cards.  For many reasons, customers want gift cards to give to their friends and family.  If you are a single store retailer, Microsoft Dynamics RMS can handle either gift card or gift certificate programs.  They key is to get your gift cards or certificates printed with a sequential number that you can put into RMS either en masse or as they are purchased.  You can also attach the value at the time of purchase, so you can print one version of the card that can have any value the customer chooses.  To utilize gift cards within RMS you need to have a item created for gift cards with the item type selected as Voucher.  You also want to set up a Tender Type for gift card so you can redeem gift cards.

For multi-store retailers, I do suggest talking to companies such as Givex, Ernex or others that have gift card programs.  You will pay more for these programs, but in the end the ability to have customers use the cards at any store in the chain is invaluable.  For more information, contact us here at Factor One and we can guide you through the process.
