Issue

Store staff report that the internet is not functioning.  Contact is made with Internet Service Provider.  Internet Service Provider (ISP) recommends resetting router as part of the process of troubleshooting.

User Impact

Resetting the router changes the IP address for your network.  Your ISP may not be aware of the effect that resetting the router will have on your Microsoft RMS installation.  Some possible issues are:

  • Portable handheld devices and network communication ceases:  MC50, MC70, HP
  • Portable printers cannot print as network devices cannot "find" them
  • VPN tunnels cease to function with RMS Headquarters
  • Merchant services integration or Stand alone terminals may need to be reset or reconfigured

Resolution

Please ask staff to contact Factor One prior to contacting the ISP.  We may be able to diagnose the situation prior to requiring a full reset of the router and therefore mitigate the issues above.

If you do not have wireless devices that work with RMS on your network, integrated Merchant Services, or RMS Headquarters, this bulletin may not apply to you.
